New Year’s Reflection

New Year’s Resolutions with a capital R are so much fun because it’s that time of year when we all get to dream up a different kind of life. And reflecting on your last year is as important if not even more so because hopefully you see the bar shifted.

Your priorities might not change, but the goalposts definitely shift a little further out. It’s easy to feel like you didn’t make it far just because you didn’t hit the exact goal you had in mind back in January. But have you looked at how the year’s events shifted your focus and worked in the reality you live in?

I’ve reinvented myself so many times, it’s basically a habit at this point. A habit of escape. Of course it’s made sense to move away, to learn something new, change my career, etc. All of these changes have been so good for me, but I’m constantly looking to how I want to change things next rather than looking back at all the turns I took in the beginning to get me here.

So, this next year will be a continuation of what I’ve built upon in the last 3 years in my art journey focus. Even though my main purpose is to create as much art as humanly possible, I’m also building a community to share that art with. I’m collaborating, sharing stories, putting others on the platform, and speaking through my community’s experiences with the art form I choose at the time.

Right now, it’s watercolor—loose, convenient, and frustrating as hell (in the best way). But, I don’t want want to be stuck in a rut with it. This next year I want to see myself painting bigger, on different surfaces, using reclaimed materials, and working with others to think outside of my ethereal box of flowy ladies with attitude.

So here’s to another year of chasing art, building community, and moving the goalpost further. Let’s see where it takes us.
